Celebrating the Birthday of Mary Aikenhead
The birthday of our foundress Mary Aikenhead is celebrated annually throughout the congregation on the 19th of January. This year in the Irish Province we had a celebration in Merrion. The afternoon was made extra special as a number of Friends of Mary Aikenhead joined us for the celebration. The afternoon began with Evening Prayer. Flags and candles were carried up in procession to represent the different areas where the Religious Sisters of Charity work: Zambia, England, Scotland, Nigeria, California, Malawi and Ireland.
Two ladies gave testimony. One lady, Phyllis Lee, recalled how her grandmother had spoken to Mary Aikenhead and was caressed by her, and how special this moment was for her grandmother. The other lady, Pat Wade, came across leaflets about Mary Aikenhead one day when she was at mass in Gardiner Street Church, and from that day she became a devotee of Mary Aikenhead. She continues to spread devotion by distributing leaflets and encouraging people to pray to Mary Aikenhead for their intentions. Two people Pat knows, who were suffering from cancer, prayed to Mary Aikenhead and are now back at work. Pat frequently speaks to Mary Aikenhead and loves her dearly.
After the prayer time there was an opportunity for Friends and Sisters to chat together. A lovely afternoon was had by all. If you would like to become a Friend of Mary Aikenhead, please see our newsletter for more information.
