The first ‘Friends of Mary Aikenhead’ group came together in October 2009 in the Sanctuary, Dublin 7. The intention of this group has been to carry out regular visits to people living in the Dublin 7 area, who are experiencing social exclusion and mental health difficulties. The group meet on a monthly basis with Srs. Stan and Síle to discuss their work, and also use the time to reflect on the work of Mary Aikenhead, the foundress of the Religious Sisters of Charity.
On 6th of June 2012, a number of new groups were formed. To date there are nine groups and they meet in the following locations in Dublin: Merrion Rd., Harold’s Cross, Walkinstown, Richmond Rd., and Stanhope Street. A group also meet in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.
The Friends of Mary Aikenhead are encouraged and supported to respond to the needs of the poor they see around them in their own way of life. The groups learn about the life, work and spirituality of Mary Aikenhead, to gain inspiration to continue her work of helping those in need. It is hoped that in the future many more groups will be formed by Friends starting groups in their own areas.
If you are interested in learning more about the life and work of Mary Aikenhead, please contact Sr. Rita Wynne by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The groups are open to all adults, young or old, male or female, married or single, employed, unemployed or retired. Everyone is unique and has something to offer.
