In 2001, the Religious Sisters of Charity established Social Innovations Ireland. This is an organisation whose purpose is to identify new and emerging needs and new ways of responding to them, and also to establish such a response and systems and structures to enable it to operate independently. So far, the organisation has achieved the following:
– Establishment of the Immigrant Council of Ireland (www.immigrantcouncil.ie).
– Establishment of the Young Social Innovator of the Year competition in secondary schools (www.youngsocialinnovators.ie).
– Publication of a major research study on the needs of elders in Irish society.
